Egypt judges to monitor the presidential elections
Egypt, Politics, 9/3/2005

Deputy chairman of the court of cassation in Egypt, advisor Hisham al-Bastaweisi, said that the general assembly for Egypt's" Judges Club" agreed by a simple majority to supervise the presidential elections due next Wednesday.

Al-Bastaweisi explained in a statement that conditions announced by the chairman of the Judges Club, Zakaraia Abdul Aziz, were misunderstood., noting that their demands call for ensuring transparency and fair election operation.

He added that the Egyptian judiciary will claim not being involved before the world form results of the elections if requirements of transparency will not be provided to the elections. He said that judges supervision of the elections is necessary to monitor any violations as happened in the recent referendum on amending the constitution.

He continued that the Judges Club will prepare a comprehensive report on these elections showing violations and also monitoring reservations on the formation of the higher committee for the elections and authorities assigned to it, especially immunizing its decisions from any administrative judicial appeal.
