Lebanon interrogates security leaders

The Lebanese authorities continued to keep in custody three former security leaders in addition to the commander of the Republican Guard after they were interrogated at the headquarters of the Internal Security leadership in Beirut on Wednesday while former parliamentarian, who was questioned, Nasser Qindil was released.

This came at a time when the Lebanese security forces broke into several apartments in Beirut believed to be that in one of them preparations being made for the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri on February 14.

Former general security chief lt. gen. Jamil al-Sayyed, former chairman of the army intelligence lt. gen. Rimond Azar; former internal security chief Lt. gen. Ali al-Haj, the current chief of the Republican Guard maj. gen. Mustafa Hamdan were brought before the Lebanese judiciary to be interrogated as suspects.

Lebanese judicial sources said that the investigation judge Elias Eid interrogated the suspectes, and that he has a grace period of 48 hours to decided if he will release them or keep them in continued custody for interrogation.

The protocol signed between the UN and the Lebanese judiciary after the formation of the UN investigation committee by the UN Security Council on April 7th, but under the condition that the Lebanese judiciary is the side which tries persons involved in the crime, according to results of the UN investigation.
