Iraqi Sunnis seek to amend the draft constitution
Iraq, Politics, 9/1/2005

Concerning political developments regarding the Iraqi draft constitution, the Iraqi Islamic Party considered that it is still possible to modify many points of differences in the Iraqi draft constitution.

The leading figure in the party Alaa Mekke said that the general political situation looms to the possibility of changing several points of difference. He explained that the announcement of the constitution by the Iraqi parliament is a not final event.

He indicated that his party dicussed the idea of dialogue and resolving problems and that discussion is still open, considering that the amendment of the constitution is considered legal, the same as the parliament's decision to approve an extension period to finish the draft constitution.

However, leaders in the Sunni political forces stressed on Tuesday their cling to foil the draft constitution during the next referendum. The official spokesman for the general conference for the Sunnis, Adnan al-Dulemi, said that the Sunnis will spare no efforts to make sure that the draft constitution will be a failure in the referendum.

For his part, the American ambassador in Baghdad Zalmay Khalilzad expected the introduction of other changes to the draft constitution in the framework of the efforts to win the support of the Sunnis, saying that the final draft has not yet been submitted, calling for more dialogue among political sides.
