Lebanon arrests four leaders in Hariri assassination investigation

The Lebanese authorities arrested three former senior security officers and the chairman of the republican guard, while a memorandum of arrest was issued for the arrest of a member of the Lebanese parliament.
This came at an official request from Detlev Mehlis, the chairman of the UN investigation committee in charge of investigating the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq ah-Hariri
Al-Jazeera said that the sources talked about the three detained persons. They are the leaders of the general security Lt. Gen. Jamil al-Sayyed, the internal security Maj. Gen. Ali al-Haj and the army intelligence Col. Rimond Azar.
Security sources said that the memorandum of arrest issued against the leader of the Republican Guard in the army, Col. Mustafa Hamdan, over whom great suspicion were roamed of being involved in the assassination of al-Hariri. The same source said that Hamdan arrived at the headquarters of the UN investigation committee to be brought before it.
In the same context, news reports said that the security forces broke into the house of parliamentarian Nasir Qindil, but he was not in his house the moment of the break in. Security sources said that Qindil had left the country and that he is in Syria.
The correspondent indicated that the chairman of the UN investigation committee met with the Prime Minister Foaud Sinioura. He added that warrant of arrest came in atmospheres of tension in Lebanon after the UN investigation committee notified the Lebanese security authorities that there is a list in the names of Lebanese figures vulnerable to assassination, and this situation resulted in that many of these figures left to outside Lebanon.
The series of assassination, which targeted the Lebanese opposition which stands against Syria, resulted in killing al-Hariri, parliamentarian Bassel Fleihan on Feb. 14 and then the Lebanese writer and journalist Samir Qasir on June 2nd, following a failed assassination attempt for the Lebanese parliamentarian Marwan Hamadeh by the beginning of October.
The Lebanese defense minister Elias al-Murr, brother in law of the Lebanese President, who is close to Syria survived an assassination attempt on his life on July 12.
