Houti supporters accused of US ambassador assassination plans
Yemen-USA, Local, 8/30/2005

Attorney representatives in a session held by the criminal elementary court in Yemen accused on Monday several gunmen from the supporters of the Yemeni Scholar, Bader Eddine al-Houthi, of attempting to blow up the American embassy and the American ambassador in Sanaa.

The representative for the attorney general Saeed Aqel said that four out of 36 persons suspected to be from al-Houthi movement tried to "attack the American embassy, after renting a house near the embassy, in a plan targeted to undermine the security of the country.

He added they also intended to attack the procession of the American ambassador Thomas Krajsky when it was in Naham city southeast of the capital Sanaa.

The attorney explained that several accused persons, suspected to have taken part in the explosions that took place in the capital during the recent past, tried to attack the American ambassador and embassy in Sanaa by RPG (rocket propelled grenades).

The four accused persons denied the allegations of the attorney. One of them, Ibrahim Sharaf Eddine, said that al-Houthi group does not believe in the need of attacking foreigners.

The suspected persons are accused of planning to carry out a series of attacks against the security authority in Sanaa. Judge Najib Muhammad al-Qadiri, who presided over the court's session, decided to adjourn the trial until next Monday.

During the past 15 months, Yemen witnessed a series of acts of detention between the lines of the Zeidi sect in the northern mountains of Yemen after Bader Eddine al-Houthi had led in 2004 a rebellion that lasted for three months during which more than 4000 persons were killed.

The rebellion was renewed in April this year and lasted for two weeks and resulted in killing 280 persons before acts of violence moved after that to the capital Yemen.
