Egypt-Israel, Local, 8/26/2005

Two officers in the Egyptian police were killed and other two injured in two explosions in Sinai where the police forces and the security are chasing a group suspected to be involved in the recent Sharm el-Sheikh attacks in July.

A statement by the Egyptian ministry of interior said that the security forces were exposed to two land mines when it was in a search operation on Thursday in Jabal al-Hilal area in Sinai.

One Egyptian security source said that the group, which carried out the attacks of Sharm el-Sheikh, are responsible for implanting the two landmines.

The explosion is the second in less than two days following Wednesday's explosion which resulted in wounding three security men in al-Hasanah area in the center of Sinai, and inflected heavy damage in their vehicle. It is not known if the mine is of the remains of wars with Israel or whether it was implanted by the executors of Sharm el-Sheikh executors.

The Egyptian police said that it arrested 8 members of the group and announced the killing of other four in a chase operation which is carried out by 4,000 police and army members. The mopping up operations include farming and mountainous areas the authorities suspect the executors of the attacks used to smuggle the explosives.

Egyptian security forces said that the campaign is being violently resisted, at a time when the security forces announced that most of the suspects in the explosions of Sharm el-Sheikh, estimated at 650 persons with most of them are from al-Areesh city on the Mediterranean, were arrested.
