Iraqi constitution differences continue
Iraq, Politics, 8/26/2005

The Iraqi parliament postponed until an indefinite time a meeting which was due on Thursday to discuss the new draft constitution of the country.

Chairman of the media department in the parliament Beshro Ibrahim said that the parliament would not be meeting as scheduled previously in order to discuss the Iraqi draft constitution and that no date was set for a new session.

Ibrahim attributed the reason to that several political blocs in the parliament could not reach an agreement over points of difference such as federalism, which prevented consensus on the draft constitution. The speaker of the parliament Hajem Hosni postponed voting on the draft constitution last Monday and said that three days of consultations might make the Sunni Arabs give up their objections.

This development came with the announcement of the Iraqi government that the final formula for the draft constitution is completed and will be officially approved later.

The spokesman for the Iraqi government Leith Kebbe said that the parliament is not in need of an official meeting to approve the document because it was actually approved on Monday.

In the context of the attempts made to settle pending issues over the draft constitution, several Iraqi political leaders started meeting to settle these pending issues. Member of the parliamentary committee in charge of drafting the constitution Mahmoud Othman said that everyone is trying to reach a final agreement on the draft constitution "because the situation is no longer bearable."

The speaker of the Iraqi national society Hajem Hosni announced the extension of consultations on drafting the Iraqi constitution for one more day. He indicated in a press conference held in Baghdad on Thursday evening that negotiations have not ended as scheduled on Thursday and would continue. He expressed his hope to reach a result by the today, Friday, evening.
