Syrian security forces clash with gunmen near Lebanese borders
Syria-Lebanon, Local, 8/23/2005

The Syrian security forces clashed with an armed group affiliated to what is called Jund al-Sham organization near the Lebanese borders in Madaya region, and the clashes resulted in killing one member of the group and detention of others.

Security sources said that the group is composed of Syrians, Iraqis, and Saudis who were planning to carry out "terrorist acts in Syria and Lebanon." The recent clash between the Syrian security forces and groups described by the Syrian authorities as extremist, came two months after a series of confrontations in the beginning of July with groups described by Damascus once as "Takfereyah" group and another as "extremist" and resulted in killing several members of the suspected persons and detention of others of various Arab nationalities and Syrians.

These clashes came one and a half months after the announcement made by the Syrian authorities of the killing of two gunmen and arresting a third after he was injured in clashes which took place in one of Damascus' quarters with a group that belongs to what is called Jund al-Sham organization.

Worthy mentioning that the said organization had announced in a video tape the responsibility for the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri on February 14. But Lebanese and Arab political sides refused to believe this announcement and considered it as an attempt to hide the real executor of this crime.
