On restructuring of government agencies in Syria
Syria, Politics, 8/22/2005
A three-day workshop on "Restructuring of Government Agencies in Syria " was opened in Damascus Sunday with the cooperation of the United Nations Development Program ( UNDP).
Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari said the workshop aims at discussing with the Malaysian experts the program of economic reforms and the 10th 5-year development plan, adding the workshop also serves as the first stage in the process of scrutinizing the efforts exerted by Syrian local agencies, the UNDP and donor countries over the past 18 months.
He added the main concentration of the next 5-year plan envisages building the national resources and reforming education mechanisms despite the fact that the plan concentrates on doubling expenditures for education over the next five years but this should go side by side with reforming the educational sector.
Dardari said Syria seeks to benefit from the Malaysian experiment in shaping and developing all-out policies and improving the performance of government agencies to be able to positively respond to the objectives of the total economic and development programs.
He added that the investment environment in Syria is good, citing that the volume of German investments in Syria amounted to more than one USD one billion while Arab investments ranges between 6 and 7 Billions.
For his part, the Resident Representative of the UNDP in Damascus, Ali Zaatari, said in another speech before the participants in the workshop that Syria with the cooperation of the UN agencies working in it will launch a report early September on Syria's objectives of development.
He added that "we can say that the list of projects which adopted real reforms in Syria is great...and the policy-makers in Syria and those who carry it out are going ahead with various means to make the polices of reforms meaningful for the development." Several Malaysian experts briefed the participants on investment, training cadres, building capabilities and skills and the way of developing rural areas. They also talked about the political, economic and social developments in their country.
