Al-Jazeera: Toppled Mauritanian president in Qatar

Al-Jazeera TV on Sunday said that the toppled Mauritanian President Mu'aweya Weld Seidi Ahmad al-Taye will be arriving in Qatar today.

Weld al-Taye resided in Gambia's capital Bangul since August 9th after he was toppled on August 3.

Meantime, an official source in Gambia said that the former Mauritanian president will be accompanied by his family and special secretary who were living in a hotel west of Bangul.

Before his arrival in Gambia, Weld al-Taye resorted to Niger following the military coupe which took place as he was in Saudi Arabia taking part in the funeral of the late Saudi King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz.

A military council composed of 17 members led by one of the closest aides to Weld al-Taye controlled the authority in the Islamic republic of Mauritania. The council vowed to make democratic elections within 2 years.
