International Herald Tribune: Iraq's effect on US internal elections politics
Iraq-USA, Politics, 8/20/2005
The International Herald Tribune underlined yesterday that restlessness regarding Bush's policy in Iraq has found its way to the Republicans particularly as the number of killed soldiers has increased. The paper noted that the latest developments on the US arena just before the elections may totally change the public opinion of Bush's administration.
The International Herald Tribune said " The Republicans described that shift as worrisome, pointing to a special election in Ohio two weeks ago, in which a Democrat, who had served as a marine in Iraq and who criticized Bush's decision to invade that country, came close to winning in a district that should have easily produced a Republican victory."
The International Herald Tribune noted that " Given the speed with which public opinion has shifted over the course of the war and the large size of the Republican majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, no one has gone so far as to suggest that war policy could return Democrats to power in the House or the Senate."
"There is just no enthusiasm for this war," said Representative John Duncan Jr., a Tennessee Republican who opposes the war. "Nobody is happy about it. It certainly is not going to help Republican candidates, I can tell you that much," International Herald Tribune reported.
