Four killed in clashes with Saudi security
Saudi Arabia, Local, 8/19/2005

At least four gunmen were killed, believed to be wanted, in a clash that took place on Thursday with the Saudi security forces in one of the quarters north of the capital Riyadh and in Madina city, west of the country.

A Saudi security source said that the clash lasted for four hours in al-Maseif quarters where five wanted were hiding, whose identities were not disclosed, in one of the houses.

The spokesman for the Saudi ministry of the interior Lt. Gen. Mansour al-Turkey said that there is a current "political operation in the region," noting that the police is trying to arrest one or more persons resisting, without giving more details.

The Saudi forces also killed two other suspects and detained many others in al-Madina al-Munawara, west of the Kingdom, which was scheduled to be visited on yesterday by the Saudi King Abdullah.

This is the first incident of its kind, since King Abdullah assumed power on August 1st following the death of King Fahd, also since the USA, Australia, and Britain last week warned against nearby attacks in Saudi Arabia.

The kingdom has been carrying out an intensive and strong security campaign against what are believed to be members of al-Qaida organization. They carried out several attacks against western and government interests. The acts of violence since May 2003 and the campaign by the Saudi authorities against the executors resulted in killing 90 civilians and 42 police men and 113 gunmen, according to official statistics.

The authorities dedicated an award of 7 million Saudi Riyals ($ 1.87 million) for anyone that helps in leading to the arrest of a suspect or foil an attack.
