Egypt election commission first meeting
Egypt, Politics, 8/18/2005

The higher electoral commission, which will supervise all coming votes in Egypt, met for the first time since the approval of its formation in July.

Justice Minister Mahmoud Abul Leil, who chaired the meeting in his capacity as its chairman, pledged that legislative elections in the future would be marked by integrity and neutrality.

Speaking at the meeting, he said the elections would be fully supervised by judges, from the casting of ballots through sorting out votes to announcing the results.

The commission would also give its recommendations on bills that could be introduced on elections, he added.

The commission, whose formation was approved by the People's Assembly on July 5, comprises 20 members including public figures, law professors and Interior Ministry representatives.
