Syria launches national report on children rights

Syria's Minister of Justice, Mohammed Ghoufari, opened a workshop on Wednesday in Homs, central Syria, organized by Ministry of Justice in cooperation with United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF on divorce issue.

In his opening address, the minister pointed out that cooperation between his ministry and UNICEF has resulted in opening 11 Family Meeting Centers so far where the parents may meet with their children quietly in a normal family atmosphere in order to ease as much as possible the problems of husband - wife separation, for the best interests of the children.

Meantime, Syria on Wednesday launched the first national report on a protocol attached to the Accord of Children's Rights organized by the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs (SCFA ) in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF ).

Chairwoman of the SCFA, Mona Ghanem, during a seminar held to launch the report, underlined the importance of the report showing in full transparency the reality of children's situation in Syria according to the protocol.

Member of the SCFA, Mohammad Daw, for his part, briefed participants on the national report, referring to the significance of International cooperation to fight crimes which target children, particularly in the field of child prostitution and trafficking.

The report reviewed measures taken by Syria to implement items of the protocol as decree No. 30 for the year 2003 on regulating operations of organs' transplant and the decision of the Ministry of Social Affairs for the year 2004 to prevent employing children under 15. The seminar was concluded by discussing the report context, focusing on the importance of enlightening children and families, noting to the role of the Interior Ministry in training and rehabilitating competent policemen to correctly deal with children who are victims to violence.
