Mauritania opposition gives up armed struggle

The coalition of Mauritania opposition on Monday announced giving up armed struggle, and gave support for a period of consultation after the regime change in the coupe which was led by the chairman of the military council Maj. Gen. Ala Weld Muhammad Faal on August 3.

Chairman of the "The movement of the knights for the change" Muhammad Weld Sheikhna said in a press conference in Senegal's capital Dakar that his movement announces "in the name of the coalition of the of the opposition Mauritania national forces giving up the use of force as a means to settle differences." Sheikhna indicated that the coalition agreed on "an Interim program to make a constitutional referendum within 6 months, and establish a national council for reconciliation that will be able within nine months to give appropriate solutions for basic problems in Mauritania before the general elections to be held within 21 months.

The coalition stressed determination to continue work for the organized return of expelled Mauritanians, calling for issuing a pardon for the "victims of the oppressive practices made under the rule of: the toppled president of Mauritania Mu'aweya weld al-Taye'."

Meantime, the foreign minister of Gambia said after his meeting with Col. Faal in Nouakchott that his country's giving asylum to the toppled President Weld al-Taye will not affect relations between the two countries, noting that his visit to Nouakchott aims at conveying a message of support to the new Mauritanian authorities.
