Mauritania opposition calls for trying al-Taye
Mauritania, Politics, 8/12/2005
Some Mauritanian opposition organizations abroad called the new ruling military council to try the toppled President Mu'aweya WEeld Seidi Ahmad al-Taye, and deal with all pending issues immediately including comprehensive political pardons.
This came during talks the president of Senegal Abdullah Wad held in the Senegalese capital Dakar with the leaders of these organizations.
However, the Islamic activist Muhammad Jamil Weld Mansour seemed to have reservations on these demands. He said it is needed now to have a pardon for all political detainees and achieve genuine peaceful democratic transfer "with gradual solution to the debated issues."
Weld Mansour indicated that this meeting was hailed by the new government since "the meeting was held with the knowledge of the military council following the call addressed by the President of Senegal to discuss issues of concern to the opposition."
The activist called for "giving the military council the opportunity to achieve what they promised they will do." In addition to the Islamists, the meeting was attended by the leader of "The Knights of Change" organization which was formed by former army officers who took part on July 8 and 9, 2003 in a coupe attempt to topple Weld al-Taye.
The new prime minister in Mauritania Seidi Muhammad Weld BuBaker said that members of the ruling military council and members of the government are committed to achieving democracy as soon as possible, and they are also committed not to nominate themselves in the future to any political post.
The "ruling military council for justice and democracy" approved the government formation chaired by Weld Bubaker, one week after their military coupe which toppled the regime of Muaweya Weld Seidi Ahmad al-Taye.
