Islamists released in Mauritania
Mauritania, Politics, 8/8/2005
In a major step described as alleviating citizen's unrest which was inflamed by the regime of Weld al-Taye, Mauritania's military released on Sunday several leaders of the Islamic trend in the country.
News reports in Mauritania said that Nouakchott prison, which contains most of the detainees, freed the detainees in shifts, while hundreds of their supporters took the streets of the capital celebrating the release.
The news reports said that some of the major figures released were Sheikh Muhammad al-Hassan Weld al-Dodo, Mukhtar Weld Muhammad Mousa, chairman of the national council for the opposition democratic forum party, which allied with the Islamists, and the man of religion Muhammad Elamine Weld al-Hassan.
Also released was the deputy chairman of the democratic forum party, activist Jamil Mansour, who was detained following his attempt to enter the country following the recent coupe.
However, Mauritania's military kept in custody some 20 detainees from the Jihad al-Salafeyah trends who are accused of having links with al-Salafeyah group for Jihad and al-Dawa ( call and Jihad) in Algeria.
