Mauritania opposition welcomes coupe
Mauritania, Politics, 8/6/2005

The armed opposition group in exile "the knights of change" welcomed the coupe in Mauritania, stressing in an official statement issued in Mali that this coupe was a necessity to rescue the country from what it described "the bloody tyrant."

Mauritania's Islamic movement welcomed the coupe and members of its leaders said in a statement that Islamists in Mauritania welcome the change in the country and calls once again on the need for consultation among all political sides in order to close the file of the past and organize the return of a constitutional life.

News reports in Nouakchott said that large number of relatives of political detainees and Islamists are gathering near a central prison in the Mauritanian capital waiting for their release.
