Mauritania coupe leaders desolve parliament
Mauritania, Politics, 8/5/2005

The "military council for justice and democracy" in Mauritania desolved the parliament and announced continued work according to the constitution of July 20 of 1991, which will be complimented by the military council charter.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, the ruling council, which started a coupe that toppled on Wednesday President Mu'aweya Weld Seidi Ahmad al-Taye, said that among articles of the constitution which it kept is an article stating "that the constitutional council, the higher Islamic council, the political parties and the municipal councils to continue common activities."

In this regard, news reports said that the chairman of the military council for justice and democracy, Ali Weld Muhammad Faal, asked the government of the toppled regime to resume its work.

He explained that the council asked the ministers and the prime ministers Saghir Weld Mubarak to continue running the affairs of the country for the meantime, and the ministers responded to this request and started their work in their ministries on Thursday afternoon.

The chairman of the military council received at the presidential palace the ambassador for the western countries in Nouakchott and the ambassadors of Arab and foreign countries. Among the received ambassadors are those of France and the USA. No information was released on the content of the meeting which are the first officially held by the new Mauritania authorities.

Washington had condemned the coupe, while Washington had not deplore it strongly until Thursday evening calling for "honoring democracy and the legitimate constitutional framework," while the Russian foreign ministry stressed in a statement Moscow's commitment to continued relations between the two countries.

However, the African Union suspended Mauritania's membership, and called on it to restore back constitutional order. A statement by its peace and security council welcomed the international condemnation of the coupe calling for trying persons who made it.
