Deteriorated health of Sudanese opposition detainees
Sudan, Politics, 7/28/2005

Some 40 members of the Sudanese opposition People's Congress, which is led by Hassan al-Turabi, have been observing a hunger strike since 8 days amid news of deteriorated health conditions of many of them.

The People's Congress detainees, most of them from Darfur, set preconditions to end their strike, calling for their right to either be charged in open court trials or to be release.

The commission in charge of defending the detainees held the government responsible for the deteriorated health conditions of many of them, and the consequences of that, after the failure of a meeting which was due on Wednesday between it and the advisor for the President of the Republic for legal affairs Badria Suleiman.

Lawyer Kamal Omar said that more than 7 of the detainees were admitted to hospital because of their deteriorated health condition. He called on the international and local legal organizations to interfere to rescue them, noting that the two organizations of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent failed to have access to the striking detainees.

He announced that representatives for the defendant commission met with the representative of the UN secretary general Kofi Annan in Khartoum, Ayan Brunk, who promised to deal with this issue with the government.

He disclosed that the government authorities distributed the striking detainees among other detention centers in order to force them to end the strike.
