Egyptian police link between Sharm al-Sheikh explosions and Taba

The Egyptian security stressed that there is a link between the Sharm al-Sheikh attacks and Taba explosions which took place in October 2004.

A security source said that experts at the crime laboratory stressed that the explosives used in the Sharm al-Sheikh attacks are of the same kind used in the Taba attacks which resulted in killing 34 persons, stressing the possible link between the executors of the two operations.

The source explained that all indicators show that the strategy pursued in Sharm al-Sheikh is the same used in Taba regarding the timing of the explosions and the locations used for implementation of these operations.

Some 600 kg of explosives were used in the Sharm al-Sheikh explosions. In the two cases, successive explosions took place at time differences that did not exceed minutes after midnight, against tourism installations.

The two attacks were carried out on two national occasions. Taba explosions took place on October 7th on the fall of the October Arab- Israeli war of 1973, while Sharm al-Sheikh explosions which resulted in killing 67 persons according to the last Egyptian official statistics coincided with Egypt's celebrations of July 23 revolution which toppled the monarchy in Egypt in 1952.

On the other hand, the Egyptian daily al-Ahram quoted a security official as saying that the 6 Pakistanis who were suspected to have links to the Sharm al-Sheikh explosions are illegal immigrants who crossed the Egyptian borders to Israel through desert roads in Sinai. The Egyptian security denied on Wednesday any link for Pakistanis in these attacks and shifted its thinking now to the responsibility of an unidentified group including Islamists Egyptian citizens living in Sinai.
