Syrian official criticizes Iraqi defense minister statements
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 7/28/2005
In response to what has been reported by news agencies today quoting the Iraqi Defense Minister accusing neighboring countries, particularly Syria, of responsibility of the bombings in Iraq, an official media source strongly criticized those accusations,
The official said that these accusations aim to distract from Iraq's inability to assume responsibility for its own security.
"Holding someone else responsible illegitimately will lead to nothing but escalating tension at time efforts should be exerted to protect Arab countries security and stability, fight terrorism and extremism which are quickly growing within the atmosphere of occupation and aggression," the official source said Tuesday.
The source stressed that "Syria has always been and still call for a coordinated Arab action ... Syria has done its best to protect its security and the Arab counties, and it has taken specified measures including hunting extremists on its lands and extraditing them to their countries."
The media official source added that the Syrian measures have embarrassed some departments in Iraq that are subjected to foreign powers, so they attempted to harm Syria through repeating baseless accusations. "Syria has taken suitable procedures along the Syrian-Iraqi borders to protect security.. it has sent a delegation to Baghdad to inspect information that it has, but there was nothing," the source said.
It added that the Arab states had asked the Iraqi government to control its borders with neighboring countries to ensure joint security and stability. "Syria renews commitment to Iraq security, stability, independence and sovereignty... this is a pan-Arab stance based on deeply-rooted ties between the two countries and peoples," the official source said.
