Amr Moussa supports Kofi Annan's definition of terrorism
Regional-UN, Politics, 7/27/2005

The secretary general of the Arab league AL Amr Mousa supported the efforts made by the UN secretary general Kofi Annan to draw a definition for terrorism in the international comprehensive treaty which countries at the UN general assembly are formulating.

Moussa said during his visit of the UN headquarters in New York that the proposed definition by Annan in Tuesday's session can be the base for the consensus to shaping the treaty, considering that Annan's definition of terrorism can be agreed upon.

In his speech on Tuesday before members of the UN general Assembly, Annan said that attacks Egypt had witnessed recently should give a new impetus for the UN campaign to adopt the "comprehensive agreement over international terrorism," noting that this draft agreement has been stumbled in one of the UN committees since 1996.

Annan said before the 191 member states in the committee, which is presided by the Moroccan ambassador Ahmad Banouna, that what had happened in London and Sharm al-Sheikh and other area "give us another reason to proceed forward to a good definition for terrorism, a definition that all of us can accept."

In the previous round of talks which took place 4 months ago, the Arab representatives at the UN continued to resist Annan's proposal because it contradicts with the right of the national liberation movements including the Palestinian movements to fighting foreign occupation. But Moussa said then that resisting occupation is quite a different issue.
