Egyptian presidential elections on September 7th

The Egyptian presidential elections committee has set a date for the elections on September 7th.

The committee said that the door will be open for nomination as from next Friday and for seven days to be ended on August 14.

The Egyptian official new Agency MENA said that President Hosni Mubarak who is expected to launch the elections for the first time before two other rivals, is not obliged to respond to the schedule set by the elections committee for nomination.

MENA said that the election campaign will start on August 17 and expires on September 4.

If any of the candidates does not recieve the total majority of the votes, run-off elections will be held on September 17 between the two candidates who get the largest number of votes.

It is not expected that Mubarak will get a serious challenge because the introduced amendment to the constitution in May laid stringent criteria for the nomination of independent candidates before a person is allowed to become a candidate. A matter which pushed certain political forces and parties not to nominate candidates for the elections.

One of the main rival for Mubarak is the leader of the liberal al-Ghad party, Ayman Nour, who was detained in January and has been tried over accusations of purgery.

Wael Nawarra a member in al-Ghad party said that the ruling council in the party voted for Nour as a candidate for the presidency with a majority of 27 with 10 opposed.
