Yemeni opposition protest acts of violence
Yemen, Politics, 7/22/2005

In the first reaction to the acts of violence taking place in Yemen, the opposition parties expressed their regret over these riot events and held the government responsible over the consequences resulting from its recent decision to increase fuel prices.

The Yemeni prime minister Abdul Qader Bajmal called in a televised speech for calm, criticizing the behavior of the demonstrators who did not make a distinction between the freedom of expression and destruction, adding that "they are real destroyers," vowing to challenge them.

The protesting demonstrators destroyed trade centers, cars and restaurants owned by citizens and attacked several government's offices and several state establishments and threw stones at the office of the prime minister and blocked streets by the use of burning tires.

According to the decision of the government, the price of one liter of Benzene will increase from 35 riyals ( 32 cents) to 62 riyals ( 60 cents ) and the price of one liter of Diesel increased from 17 to 45 riyals, while gas cylinder will increase from 205 to 400 riyals for one gas cylinder.

Worthy mentioning that the Yemeni government started since 1995 economic measures, in the course of a financial reformation program proposed by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank under the pretext that the economy might collapse of such reforms will not be made.
