Moussa tackles with Merghani latest developments in Sudan
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 7/21/2005

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa Tuesday discussed with leader of the Sudanese National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Mohamed Othman Al-Merghani the latest developments in Sudan.

At a press conference following the meeting, Merghani said he had consultations with the AL chief on the outcome of the Cairo Agreement signed in May between the Khartoum government and the NDA, underlining that he handed over instruments of the agreement to Moussa in a bid to follow up and helping in implementing it.

Merghani further lauded the key role played by Egypt and the Arab League in achieving peace and stability in Sudan.

A political delegation from the NDA political and military committee is expected to head for Khartoum in the coming days to continue negotiations on a number of different topics, the Sudanese official said.

Merghani spoke of a new reality in Sudan after Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir and his First Vice-President John Garang and Second Vice-President Ali Othman Taha took the constitutional oath.

He expressed hope that stability would now prevail in all parts of Sudan through the participation of all political powers.

Merghani said he will take part in the coming presidential and parliamentary elections so long as they are fair.

The Alliance leadership is scheduled to hold a meeting in Asmara on August 15, to determine whether it will return and take part in the government or not.
