Turabi and Garang discuss cooperation
Sudan, Politics, 7/21/2005
The leader of the People's Congress party, Hassan al-Turabi, on Tuesday evening discussed with Sudan's Vice President, John Garang, developments of the Sudanese political scene and means of developing the memorandum of understanding signed between them in 2001 which led to Turabi's imprisonment before he was released just recently.
Following the meeting which lasted for more than two hours, the two leaders stressed "support for the Sudanese peace agreement without any hesitation," despite the reservation of the People's Congress on main items of this agreement. The two sides also stressed the need for joint work to create a new atmosphere among all political forces in Sudan.
Turabi said that meeting with Garang comes in the course of building ties and relations which lasted for long before the introduction of the Salvation Government in the coupe held by President al-Bashir in 1989. Turabi indicated that the development of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides in February 2001 in Geneva stopped "because its signers were jailed."
For his part, Garang, who recently assumed the post of the First Vice President of Sudan, renewed the commitment his party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), to implement the peace agreement to reach a comprehensive peace in Sudan, recalling that "new Sudan is a project for the sake of which everyone is working."
