Syria will ask for compensating Syrian workers hurt in Lebanon
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 7/21/2005
In its Wednesday's issue, the Syrian al-Thawra daily said that Damascus will ask the new Lebanese government for compensations to "the Syrian workers who were damaged in Lebanon following the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri."
The paper quoted the Syrian minister of labor and social affairs, Deyala al-Haj Aref, that Syria will start with the new government negotiations over "the issue of compensating for the Syrian workers who were damaged and attacked in Lebanon." The Syrian minister stressed that compensation is a right for those effected, noting that there were killed and damaged Syrians, and stressed the need to compensate them and defend their rights according to bilateral diplomatic relations between various countries in the world.
Following the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister on February 14 in Beirut, the Syrian workers in Lebanon who tolled 300,000 fled after many of them were vulnerable and even killed.
On the other hand, the Syrian al-Baath daily, mouthpiece of the Syrian ruling Baath party, said that the Syrian authorities reinforced monitoring the Lebanese borders three weeks ago, and this resulted in an almost complete halt in the movement of goods after "infiltration of persons and weapons were discovered." The paper stressed that "the Syrian- Lebanese border crisis came only after infiltrated persons, weapons and dangerous smuggled items were found."
