Syria supports Iraq's security, sovereignty, stability
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 7/20/2005
Syrian Minister of Interior, Ghazi Kanaan, underlined Syria's care for establishing best relations with Iraq, as well as cooperating with it to boost its national unity and its complete independence.
In his speech at the Conference of Iraq's Neighboring Countries' Interior Ministers Tuesday, Kanaan said "Syria has been caring for achieving security on borders with Iraq and to prevent infiltration through its lands," pointing out that "brothers in Iraq realize Syria's efforts being exerted in this regard to help Iraqi government and boost its authority."
"We should never forget that the issue of controlling borders should be adopted by all neighboring countries to fight terrorism by all means," the minister stressed.
He also underscored importance of "increasing coordination among the neighboring countries," and "signing a security cooperation agreement" between Ministries of Interior in Syria and Iraq, asserting Syria's readiness to put an initial project that organizes this cooperation and discuss it to reach the final formula.
Kanaan noted that the Conference aims at confirming Iraq's territorial integrity as well as supporting its security and stability.
"We aspire, through this coordination, to achieve peace of our countries and of others," Kanaan added, asserting that security deterioration in any of the neighboring states will lead to negative repercussions on other states, a matter that makes security cooperation of high interest to all.
The minister underlined absolute rejection of terrorism, asserting support to legitimate resistance against occupation.
He also stressed support to the Palestinian people's right to decent living and to establish their independent state, asserting at the same time Syria's right to restore the occupied Golan and the Lebanese right to liberate their occupied lands.
