Egypt, Politics, 7/19/2005
An Egyptian official announced on Monday that the presidential elections in will be held on September 7, and will be the first where multiple candidates are allowed. However, the university professor Saad Eddine Ibrahim decided to give up his nomination for the presidency.
The Egyptian official said that the presidential elections will be held on the first Wednesday of September, meaning on September 7th, adding that the elections committee will meet next Sunday to decided the date for starting official registration for the candidates.
The official indicated that the registration of the candidates might take place within the 48 hours which will follow the meeting of the elections committee, noting that the elections campaign will be in the three weeks prior to the election operation.
Saad Eddine Ibrahim who was jailed in 2002, on charges of distorting the image of Egypt abroad, said in a statement that the "series of maneuvers and acts of deception by the side of the regime voided the content and substance of the constitutional amendment for allowing multiple candidates. The opposition has said that the constitutional change was symbolic and not real because of the requirements for qualification to be a presidential nominee.
He explained he will dedicate all his efforts towards monitoring the elections operation by making use of Egyptian and foreign volunteers.
The secretary of policies in the Democratic National party, Jamal Mubarak, said that the party seeks to increase competition and honest elections, noting that the party will have a role in choosing its candidate in the presidential elections and that procedural sessions will be held at various levels of the party in order to choose the party's candidate, in a way similar to what was stated in the constitution of the party for choosing a President for this political party.
