One person killed in clash between Amal, Jaajaa supporters in Beirut
Lebanon, Politics, 7/19/2005

At least one person was killed and other 12 injured in armed clashes between members of the dissolved Lebanese forces led by Samir Jajaa and others from the Shiite Amal movement in al-Shayyah area. The clashes took place through what used to be known during the Lebanese civil war as the front line between the two parts of west and east of Beirut.

Lebanese security forces said that the clashes erupted following a row by sticks and stones between members representing the two sides on the background of the celebrations held by Jajaa supporters after the parliament's vote on a pardon for Jaajaa after he spent 11 years in prison. This pushed the Lebanese army to interfere and arrest several gunmen.

During their celebrations, Jaajaa supporters used firework on late Monday evening in the area, and this resulted in the eruption of the problem which developed to armed confrontations.

The launching of the fireworks came in completion of the celebrations Jajaa supporters carried out minutes after the vote in the Lebanese parliament provided for his release. Then hundreds of Jaajaa supporters performed fire works and hoisted the Lebanese flags and roamed streets in their cars while church bells were rung in Bsherri, his birth place.
