Egypt-Regional, Politics, 7/18/2005
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit yesterday mandated a team of specialists in his ministry to represent Egypt in New York during the negotiations on expanding the UN Security Council.
During its recent summit in Sirte, Libya, the African Union (AU) entrusted Egypt, a member of the African Group at the UN, with the task of a presenting Africa's proposals for UN reform.
The Foreign Minister instructed the delegation to underline the legitimacy of Africa's claims and the need to abide by commitments and objectives outlined in the Sirte communique.
Abul-Gheit also highlighted the need to cooperate with all parties and other geographic entities to ensure the greatest degree of consensus on African demands.
These diplomatic moves on the part of Africa and Egypt come at a time when the UN General Assembly is preparing to vote, after 12 years of continuous discussions, on Security Council expansion.
