Egyptian security delegation in Gaza today to contain Palestinian faction's crisis
Palestine-Egypt, Politics, 7/18/2005
An Egyptian security delegation is due in Gaza today for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian faction's leaders on means to strengthen unity of Palestinian ranks and activating inter-Palestinian dialogue, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted reliable sources in Gaza as saying.
The visit is intended to focus on future prospects after the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and north of the West Bank in mid- August, MENA added.
Palestinian officials said the Egyptian mediators will try to stop a renewal of fighting between activists and Palestinian security forces, a matter which threatens to complicate Israel's pullout from Gaza next month.
The Egyptian officials will also urge activist factions to remain committed to the de facto cease-fire declared in February which is on the brink of collapse following the worst upsurge of violence since then, they said.
"The Egyptian officials will work with the two parties to end the crisis and will urge factions to remain committed to calm," a Palestinian official told Reuters, adding that the Egyptian delegation would include senior security officers.
