Sharaa discusses with Amr Moussa Iraq and Palestine
Syria-Regional, Politics, 7/18/2005

Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara discussed Sunday with Arab League Secretary General recent developments in the Arab Arena particularly in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian territories.

"We discussed the best formulas of regaining Arab solidarity," Secretary General Amr Moussa told reporters just after meeting with President Bashar al-Assad and minister al-Shara.

Moussa underlined that talks with al-Assad dealt with every thing related to the recent developments in the region particularly on both Iraqi and Palestinian arenas.

"Situation in the region is very dangerous, so it needs a firm Arab stance and solidarity as well as a continuous coordination that pours into the Arab interest to provide and protect security and stability in the region," Moussa stressed.

He underlined that what Israel has been doing in Palestine constitutes a great violation of the international law as well as the resolution of the International Court of Justice, and forms an obvious rejection of the UN legitimacy.

"Israel's continuity of building more settlements and the racial separation wall shows the Israeli evil inetntions regarding every peace process," the Secretary General added.

Moussa stressed the significance of the Palestinian national unity, warning against any disagreement among the Palestinians because "it will definitely flow into the interest of enemies."

"The Palestinian national unity is the main weapon that the Palestinian people own to face the Israeli continues aggressions against them," he asserted.

As for situation in Iraq, the Moussa highlighted the importance of protecting Iraq's Arabism, noting "Iraq is a founding member in the Arab League as well as a main member in the Arab society and the Middle East." He appreciated Syria's important role in Iraq "which has participated a lot in realizing security and stability in Iraq and in the region as well."

Regarding the Syrian-Lebanese relations, Moussa commented that "relations between the two countries are deep and strategic and both sides are interested in preserving their strong and productive ties."
