Syria expresses deep concern over incidents in Gaza strip
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 7/16/2005

While the Israeli planes were carrying out attacks against Palestinian positions early today, violent clashes were taking place between Hamas activists and the Palestinian police in al-Zeitoun quarters in Gaza, and this resulted in killing two civilians and injuring 6 policemen and 19 civilians and burning three police cars and three jeep cars.

The Palestinian minister of state Sakher Bseisou, who was charged earlier of making contacts with Hamas said that the activists only left one option for the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas which is the "iron fist," accusing Hamas of trying to impose its force in the area, while Abbas was meeting with the security leaders in Gaza to discuss security developments.

Syria expressed Friday deep concern and regret over the recent incidents of conflict between Palestinian groups that took place in Gaza Strip at a time when the Strip is facing ongoing Israeli aggression.

"Syria hopes that such incidents won't happen again since they hurt the Palestinian issue and the Arab cause in general, and they contribute to achieving Israeli aims to plant seeds of partition among the Palestinians and incite sedition that leads to a Palestinian civil war," an official information source said Friday in a statement to SANA.

The source pointed out to the danger of such incident, stressing Syria's call on all the Palestinian institutions and factions "to contain the incident, and to deal with its results in a way that maintains the Palestinian national unity, and to unite the Palestinian people's efforts to achieve their aims of liberation and building their independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."
