Sudan-European Union, Politics, 7/14/2005

The European Union has appointed the Finnish diplomat Bekka Havisto on Wednesday to be the first EU special envoy to Sudan in order to coordinate to peace keeping forces in Darfur district to the west of Sudan.

The EU decided to appoint Havisto who was a former minister of environment and development and currently presides over the UN work force in the African Greater Lakes district, as a full timer coordinator to coordinate work between the EU and Sudan.

It is, however, expected that the EU foreign ministers will agree on appointing Havisto during a meeting on Monday, in addition to appointing the Slovak diplomat Yan Kubis as a special envoy for central Asia region which was under the control of the former Soviet Union.

In addition to NATO, the EU supports the African Union in Darfur in various fields like supporting the police and transporting soldiers by air and in areas of supplies, relief and training.

So far, the EU appointed two envoys for 8 hotbed areas in the Middle East, Bosnia, and Afghanistan in the course of the efforts to enhance its role in the foreign policy.

The large scale between the government forces and the two rebel forces in Darfur resulted in killing thousands and displacement more than two millions to the refugee camps inside Sudan and the neighboring state of Chad.
