Former Polisario executive calls on civil society to defend Moroccan Sahara issue
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 7/13/2005
Former Polisario executive, Mustpaha Bouh Barazani on Sunday called on civil society notably Sahrawi to get fully involved in defending the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Speaking at a meeting with "Amnir Association for Development and Cooperation," he said civil society should be an active actor that defends the kingdom territorial integrity, noting that the artificial issue of Sahara is a question of civil society organizations.
Recalling reforms ushered in the kingdom to consolidate the rule of law through reinforcing human rights, freedom of speech and national reconciliation with past violations, he said organizations and civil society are called to work together to defend the democratic achievements and national values to build a common front against opportunists who seek to destroy or weaken the national unity from inside.
Face to their disillusion, he said, Algeria and its protˇgˇs are encountering many desertions and failures as demonstrated by Tindouf camps uprising and the return of several former high-ranking Polisario officials and executives to their homeland, Morocco.
As for Laayoune incidents that took place late May because of some vandals trying to prevent the transfer of an inmate, he noted the importance to consolidate the internal ranks and national unity and preserve democracy achieved by the kingdom.
Barazani also underlined that there would no settlement to the Sahara issue but within regionalization under Moroccan sovereignty over its Southern provinces.
He also noted Algiers use of arms and its petrodollar policy that aim to harm Morocco's territorial integrity through pushing many countries to recognize the phantom entity of Polisario.
For their part, the participants at this meeting reiterated the Moroccanity of the Sahara and the need to a strong and homogeneous front to face the enemies' manoeuvres.
They highlighted the importance of parallel or popular diplomacy in this issue to defend the Moroccan territorial integrity.
"Amnir Association for Development and Cooperation" called on Sahrawis that are living abroad to return to their homeland, Morocco to "consolidate the democratic process and reinforce the rule of law."
