Bouteflika: national reconciliation initiative to bring Algeria together
Algeria, Politics, 7/12/2005

Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika reaffirmed yesterday that the Algerian people will "soon" have to decide on the national reconciliation initiative which grants pardons to many outlaws as a result of the civil conflict the country has suffered.

"This important historical event will be a new conquest in the NationŐs march, which shall consolidate its unity, establish its solidarity, spread the culture of peace, tolerance and fraternity, and pave the way for cooperation and mutual aid," the president underscored in a message to the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) Council. "Owing to this noble social achievement, Algeria shall turn the page of pain, sadness and violence," he continued, the officla news agency APS reported.

Meantime, Eight gunmen were killed in a vast security operation which has been ongoing since Saturday by the Algerian security forces in Bumerdas district to the east of the capital Algiers.

One Algerian security source said that the gunmen who were killed are members of "al-Salafeyah group for call and fighting" linked to al-Qaida organization, adding that three soldiers were killed in the operation.

This security operation came after several acts of assassination against the security men, the last of which was killing three soldiers on Wednesday near Teizi Ozo city, according to the Algerian papers.

The security operation comes at a time when President Butaflika announced that a referendum will be held for the Algerians over a comprehensive pardon concerning the gunmen, most of them are members of al-Salafeyah group and members of the security forces involved in violations.
