New bloody day in Iraq

Gunmen in Iraq yesterday killed nine Iraqi soldiers in al-Khales city near Baqouba to the north east of Baghdad, seven of them killed in an armed clash and two in a booby trapped car explosion. This was one day after the killing of 50 persons in various areas in Iraq.

The first clash took place at an inspection point for the Iraqi army on Monday at dawn. Sources in the Iraqi police said that three civilians were killed in the fighting which lasted for half an hour.

In the same fighting, other two soldiers were killed when a small truck blew up, as it was parked on the road trodden by reinforcements from the Iraqi army which arrived to challenge the gunmen.

Six Iraqis were killed and other 22 injured as a result of bombardment to Tel-Afer city to the west of Musil. It also resulted in destroying nine houses in Jabi al-Qalaa and Hassan Kawi quarters in the city which has been witnessing confrontations between the American forces and gunmen since two days.

In Musil to the north of Baghdad, the Iraqi police arrested three persons suspected in blowing up operations.

In Tikrit to the north of the capital, the American forces arrested 13 Iraqis over suspicion that they are processing bombs. Since two days, the American army have been launching raids against the city and its neighborhood in search for gunmen.

In Samera to the north of Baghdad, gunmen kidnapped Akram Khalaf, a prominent former member in the dissolved Baath Party, according to the police.

To the south of Baghdad, the police said it found four bodies floating in the river and were killed by bullets.
