Syrian-Lebanese borders in Dabosiya opened
Syria-Lebanon, Economics, 7/11/2005
General Director of Customs Basel Sanoufa has categorically denied that the Syrian-Lebanese borders in Dabosiya were closed to Lebanese trucks.
In a statement to al-Baath daily on Sunday, Sanoufa said "a severe traffic congestion led to the close the road when the Lebanese trucks stopped on two sides of the road which cause the traffic to reach a stand still."
Sanoufa stressed that immediate measures were taken to run again the traffic on the road, but the movement was still slow due to the severe traffic congestion and the inspection measures to prevent any customs and security violations.
General Commanding Officer of the Custom Office in Dabosiya asserted that the trucks movement has become ordinary, pointing out that there is no obstacles from the Syrian side but the Lebanese drivers stopped their trucks on the two sides of the road which caused the movement to stop.
Sannoufa on Sunday said that the crowd which some border crossing-points with neighboring countries are witnessing is partly due to a plan to rehabilitate all border points including those with Lebanon. "Trucks movement along al-Dabousya crossing point with Lebanon is normal," Sanoufa told SANA, adding that the trucks conjestion was because the Lebanese trucks have been entering Syria with a 6 kilometer queue, creating difficulties at checking points.
He criticized what has been said about the convoys waiting at the Dabousya crossing point, clarifying that the matter is related to two things: "first is the narrow area of Dabousya point where it doesn't have room for more than two lanes.. The second reason is the disorder in regard to opening the crossing points with Iraq, causing long queues of trucks there," he added.
He said that at one point, a 65 kilometer queue of trucks had developed inside the Syrian territories, noting that the trucks were coming from Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and the Syrian coastal cities of Lattakia and Tartous.
