Mauritania intensifies efforts against Islamist groups accused of extremism
Mauritania, Politics, 7/11/2005

The secretary general of the ruling party in Mauritania, Belah Weld Makkeyeh, said on Saturday that his party announced a "general alert" in the country which he said is living in a state of war against what he called terrorism inside and outside the country, and postponed the convening of the party's congress in three months.

On June 3rd, the Mauritanian al-Magheiti base to the north east of the country was exposed to an attack that resulted in killing 15 persons and wounding 17 in the lines of the Mauritanians.

On Friday, the Mauritanian ministry of the interior received several parliamentarians and leaders of political parties, rallied under the majority and the opposition, and informed them that there is a "Jihad" organization branch found in Mauritania.

The Mauritanian authorities stressed it discovered a "Jihadi group" called "Mauritania group for call and fighting" that affiliates to "al-Salafeyah group for call and fighting" in Algeria which supports al-Qaida organization.

Also on Saturday, the Mauritanian al-Shaab paper warned families from the risks to the young persons who are exposed to "brain wash" and "are converted to extremists who do not hesitate to kill believers in the land of Islam." Some 50 Islamists, accused of leading societies belong to the Algerian "al-Salafeyah group for call and fighting" or those who oppose the law which outs the mosques as general establishment under the authority of the country in June, are waiting for their trial in Nouakchott.
