Organization linked to al-Qaida active in Somalia
Somalia, Politics, 7/11/2005
The International Emergency Force in Somalia stressed that one organization linked to al-Qaida called al-Mujahideen organization has started to be active in that country, warning that the lack of security there will lead to the increase of the pace of its activities and the emergence of new organizations.
A statement by the said force said that the Somali capital Mogadishu is the focal point for the work of the organization which alleged that a leader of a militia, who trained in al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan, is the one which leads the organization which carried out several operations claiming the lives of several members of the UN peace keeping force in Somalia.
The organization was accused of being responsible for the killing of four relief workers in Somalia, in addition to 10 military officers working the terrorism fighting field.
The report explained that the organization is still in its early development and its members do not exceed scores, and it can be challenged through restoring security to the country through the foundation of a legitimate government.
The statement warned that neglecting security in the country and the drastic situation of depressed citizens will allow a fertile soil for the growth of terrorism and the emergence of other organizations.
The report indicated that in addition to the Mujahideen organization, there are other two extremists organizations. They are al-Qaida cell in Somalia and the remains of the Islamic Union organization.
The interim government of President Abdullah Youssef constitutes the 14th attempt for the foundation of a government in Somalia which is overwhelmed by chaos since 1991, when a coalition of warlords toppled dictator Muhammad Seyad Berri and the country fell into total disorder.
