Tunisia, Economics, 7/11/2005

Tunisian tourism revenues increase during the first half of the current year by 11.6% in comparison with the same phase of 2004 to reach 981 million Tunisian dinars (USD 734 million).

Official statements said that despite the notable increase in this year's revenues in comparison with the figures of 2004, however, it reached only the level of revenues for the same period of 2001, the standard year when tourism revenues exceeded one billion Tunisian dinars in 6 months.

However, tourism revenues reached in 2001 2.34 billion dinars while number of tourists reached 5,387 million tourists.

Officials expect tourism figures to break the standard figures registered in 2001 by receiving 6.5 million tourists and achieving revenues reaching 2.55 billion dinars for the entire year.

Tourism in Tunisia is considered the largest sector contributing to bringing hard currency by ensuring 330,000 job opportunities besides covering a rate of 58% of trade deficit.
