El Mundo writes about pro-Morocco Sahrawis
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 7/9/2005
The Spanish daily, El Mundo admits the presence of Moroccan Sahrawis (inhabitants of the Moroccan Sahara) who advocate the "Moroccanity" of the Sahara, and says it is impossible to determine their number and weight without a referendum.
In a report published on Monday, the paper wrote that "there are Sahrawis, of undetermined number, who reject the "Polisario Front" and advocate integration in Morocco."
The "Polisario" is a separatist movement backed by Algeria. It claims the separation of Morocco's southern provinces, the Sahara, from the rest of the country.
The paper says that pro-Moroccans and pro-Polisario in the Sahara claim the other part is a minority whose impact is insignificant in this conflict.
Interviewed by El Mundo, Mohamed, a high-ranking Moroccan employer of Sahrawi descent, who went to school in Spain, said "it warms my heart to learn that people in Spain say they are friends of the Sahrawi people," pointing out that "the Sahrawi people is not uniquely those who are in the Tindouf camps," southwestern Algerian.
Mohamed observed that 42 deputies in Morocco's parliament are of Sahrawi descent, and that "60% of the Moroccan territory is governed by high-ranking employees of Sahrawi descent. And this is a fact that we can't occult."
The daily also spoke to a Sahrawi deputy and the leader of a Sahrawi association, who both denounced the "Polisario" diktat, recalling that over 5,000 officials and members of the front fled the Tindouf camps to join the motherland.
