Lebanon calls for extending UNFIL forces in south lebanon

Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud called on the UN to extend mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon UNIFIL in South Lebanon for another six months.

In a message sent Friday to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Hammoud considered that Israeli hasn't implemented the UN Security Council resolution 425 an hasn't stopped its attacks on the Lebanese lands, pointing out that the resolution hasn't achieve security and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, Hammoud and the UN Secretary General's Personal Representative to South Lebanon, Gier Pederson, discussed the security situation in the South following the latest Israeli aggressions on the Lebanese lands.

"We asserted that Israel continued its aggression by land, airspace and sea on the Lebanese territories and Israeli warplanes dropped provocative paper clippings on the Lebanese lands which constitutes a violation of the Lebanese sovereignty," Hammoud added. For his part, Pederson underlined the necessity of easing tension.

Hammoud and Pederson stressed the important role of the UN in achieving stability in the South.
