Syria urges effective role for OIC
Syria-Regional, Politics, 6/30/2005

Syria's Deputy FM Walied al-Mua'llem stressed, in his speech before the Organization of the Islamic Conference Foreign Ministers Meeting in the Yemeni Capital of Sana'a, the importance of realizing, during the conference, a joint perception related to reform of the United Nations as well as expanding the Security Council's membership.

"The first step in reform of the united nations and enhancing its role on the international arena can be realized by expressing keenness on implementing all of its resolutions without selectivity," al-Mua'llem said.

Demanding of a permanent seat for the OIC in the Security Council, al-Mua'llem assured: "It is illogical for the OIC not to be represented in the security council while it includes about 57 states."

Deputy Foreign Minister, Al-Mua'llem called the meeting to deal with reasons behind the OIC limitation on the international arena.

"The weakness of the OIC role on the international arena has not let it mass the international community efforts, to oblige Israel to implement the UN Security Council resolutions that call to end the occupation of Arab lands in Palestine, Golan and Southern Lebanon. This is as well as softness of some of our states to boycott Israel preferring instead to carry on normalization with her despite its nonstop aggression and occupation," the Syrian official said.

Al- Mua'llem said that Arabs have chosen the road of the just and comprehensive peace to end the Arab-Israeli conflict and launched in Beirut summit the Arab peace initiative that is based on the international resolutions but Israel instead has selected the road of occupation and the aggression continuity in addition to building the separating wall and rejecting the Palestinian refugees return.

Deputy Foreign Minister underlined the need of the honest and serious search of means and ways that would halt this passive direction as well to increase the vitality and effectiveness of the OIC and its general secretariat.

"Syria is expressing its strong support to build trade preferential status system among our states to lead to achieve a tangible increase in trade exchange volume of our countries," Al- Mua'llem said.
