Abul-Gheit to Le Figaro: Egypt rejects imposition of foreign ideas
Egypt-USA, Politics, 6/29/2005
"Egypt rejects the imposition of any foreign ideas on it and has set the target of organizing fair and transparent presidential elections," Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul -Gheit said.
In statements to the French Le Figaro newspaper on Tuesday, in which he highlighted the democratic progress made in Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak announced his historic initiative on amending the constitution to allow contested elections, Abul -Gheit explained why Cairo strongly opposed being forced to adopt foreign concepts by saying that the country was seeking to achieve democratic progress in accordance with the tempo that best suited it.
Abul- Gheit expressed reservations about the American viewpoint on resolving the Palestinian question by addressing a single problem at a time.
"Would this mean that we should allow the West Bank, which is still under occupation, to erupt in violence because the Gaza Strip was going to be free?
