Court postpones case of Islamist activist Nadia Yassine
Morocco, Politics, 6/29/2005
The court of first instance of Rabat decided, Tuesday, to postpone the case of Islamist activist Nadia Yassine on request of the defense.
Yassine, member of the unauthorized group of Al Adl Wal Ihssane, is sued for anti-monarchy statement.
In an interview with the Moroccan weekly Al Ousbouia Al Jadida, Yassine vented her preference for the republican regime, saying the monarchy does not suit Morocco. She's been sued along with two journalists of Al Ousbouia Al Jadida.
The Moroccan government Spokesman, Nabil Benandellah, had affirmed that the statements of Nadia Yassine are opposite to the "deep beliefs of the Moroccan nation." "It is natural to have recourse to justice when the provisions of the Constitution are violated," he said.
Benabdellah told a press briefing "the press code is clear and defines responsibilities of persons who make statements, those who publish them, those who print them and those who distribute them."
