Egypt calls for natural gas usage in Egypt
Egypt, Economics, 6/28/2005

Egypt's Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif demanded yesterday the planning of a specific strategy for natural gas usage in Egypt.

Ultimately, Egyptian supplies would replace imported fuel in gas cylinders, said Cabinet Spokesman Magdi Radi yesterday.

Nazif also said that he would prefer natural gas to be used as the main fuel in power stations and heavy industries such as fertilizers, iron and cement, Radi noted.

This came following a meeting Nazif held with the member of the Permanent Ministerial Committee on the Policies of Gas use and Industrialization.

Radi said that Egypt's reserves of natural gas, estimated at 67 trillion cubic feet and placing Egypt as having the seventh largest natural gas reserves in the world, would enable us to export more natural gas.

Nazif added that the government's strategy over the next five years is to deliver natural gas to 6 million housing units, including tourist cities such as Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, concluded Radi.
