Egypt-Holland, Economics, 6/28/2005

Egypt and Holland have agreed to initiate an ambitious plan to establish fish farms in the desert by using pure water irrigation.

The plan is to increase the production by a minimum of 40,000 tones of fish annually to meet both domestic needs and to produce a surplus for export.

The Dutch government has allocated around one million euro to the project.

This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Ahmed El-Leithi, during a meeting with a delegation of investors and businessmen about the agriculture and fish production industry.

The meeting was also attended by the Dutch ambassador to Cairo. Other issues discussed at the meeting included the importance of improving laws and current provisions in the fish production industry, the guarantee of the safety and quality of fish production, and the improvement of employee technical levels through qualifying programmes.
